Do you want to get up close to sharks, visit with penguins or just dive into a new career? Let’s take a look at one of the most unique businesses in our area.
SeaWorld San Antonio sits on 250 acres and is the largest of the three parks owned by Sea World Parks & Entertainment, a division of The Blackstone Group. It opened in 1988 and now has about 2,000 local staff positions. It was ranked as the sixth largest private sector area employer for 2009, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
In October 2009, Anheuser-Busch announced plans to sell the division to Blackstone Group, a private-equity firm, in order to reduce the debt load. The sale was completed on Dec. 1, 2009.
Some jobs are part time and seasonal, but that may create a fun opportunity or allow you to develop new skills that could lead to a full-time career. Here is a sample of some current openings:
- Zoo Attendant – it helps to have a scuba certification and strong swimming skills,
- Camp Counselor – helps to have CPR/First Aid training, and a love of working with children.
Job search link – Worlds of Discovery includes parks in San Antonio, Florida and California.
The Beluga Interaction Program: take your turn as a trainer, is just a sample of the many unique ways to learn about sea life.
“Put on a wet suit and slip into the water for a memorable encounter with beluga (white) whales. The educational experience includes a classroom presentation on the beluga’s natural history and physiology, a talk on how SeaWorld trains animals through “positive reinforcement” and an unforgettable opportunity to interact with these whales in the water.”
Impact to San Antonio
- Leading tourist venue with a unique educational opportunity
- Water and energy conservation:
According to their web site, in 2008 http://www.seaworld.com/ SeaWorld San Antonio received the San Antonio Water System’s Water Saving Pioneer Award for its efforts to save 30 million gallons of water a year and lessen the park’s impact on local water sources like the Edwards Aquifer.”
- They also have programs in place for recycling and sustainability
- And a non-profit charitable foundation to support wildlife conservation
If you’re not looking for a new job but want to arrange a special Valentine event—did you know that you can reserve a dining experience at Sea World? They offer a poolside buffet next to Shamu or the Sharks/The Coral Reef exhibit. Isn’t that much more unique than a box of chocolates. Plan a whale of a romantic night.
Go explore, get your feet wet and make a splash.
