The City of Surrey, B.C., is planning a massive 13-day winter festival to celebrate the 2010 Olympic Winter Games at Holland Park.
Giant tents and four massive video screens will be set up to broadcast Olympic events in the 24-acre urban park next to the King George Highway, starting on Feb. 12, the opening night of the Games.
Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner said the city, located southeast of Vancouver, may not be hosting any Olympic sporting events but it does have enough spirit to host the biggest Olympic party south of the Fraser River.
“We’re a city of young families and promoting healthy living and healthy activity, and this is one way that we can be part of the whole thing,” Hepner said.
Among the free events planned for the site are daily shows of the RCMP Musical Ride, top musical acts like Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts, and winter activities like tobogganing, skating, curling, and arts and crafts.
The money to host the party for an estimated 20,000 people each day will come from combining other winter events already in the city’s budget, she said.
“We’ve collapsed a few of our city events that we would ordinarily do in the winter like our Winterfest, so we’re investing on-site about $3 million,” said Hepner.
The event is being held just steps away from the King George SkyTrain station so tourists and partiers from downtown Vancouver can easily make their way to the festival.
