Local dancers have an exciting opportunity to audition for major professional dance schools without traveling far. Talent scouts are holding auditions for their summer intensive programs at North Carolina Dance Theatre’s studios in Charlotte starting this month through April.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to broaden your experience and training. You may be surprised at the results. Some scholarships will be awarded, and some talented dancers may be offered apprenticeships. Doors may open that you never dreamed of.
Several dancers who attended last summer’s intensive at NCDT were awarded apprenticeships with NCDT’s prestigious year-round Conservatory program. They take several classes each day with master teachers and perform with the professional company.
Even if you don’t think your skills are strong enough, or you don’t plan to spend the summer studying at a particular school, you will gain valuable experience taking classes from excellent teachers and learning how to audition. These classes will also give you a chance to assess your progress against other dancers your age.

Audition requirements vary. Arrive early to register and warm up. Wear a conservative, solid-colored leotard and pink tights, hair in a tight bun, and ballet shoes. Bring your pointe shoes if you are on pointe. Smile!
Most auditions require a résumé and photographs (head shot and a pose in leotard and tights, usually in first arabesque or tendu to second position). You can take these photographs yourself; they don’t have to be professional studio shots. Fees are collected at registration, from $20-$30. Some auditions accept cash only.
