Tequila Semental is yet another newcomer in the crowded premium tequila market. The owners must be hoping sales will live up to its name – a semental is a carefully selected fighting bull used for breeding – and stand apart from the numerous others on the shelves of bars and retail outlets.
Semental is triple-distilled and some of the characteristically “earthy” flavor of lowlands agave is lost in the third distillation. The blanco and reposado are great choices for those who prefer a more subtle, smooth agave flavor, but the añejo is likely to please any palate.
Tequila Semental Silver Tasting Notes
The crystal clear silver is thin like water in the glass and has very long, slim legs. It has a crisp, fresh vegetal scent of agave with a lingering scent of citrus and a hint of lemongrass. This is a tequila produced using agave from the lowlands, which is immediately detectable as it has a distinct earthy flavor and lacks the sweet character of a tequila using agave from the highlands. It is extremely smooth – so smooth that the flavor of the tequila is extremely subtle. There are notes of tangerine and mango and a hint of lemon. The finish is short-lived and lingers for only a few seconds.

Tequila Semental Reposado Tasting Notes
The reposado is the color of golden, almost yellow, straw. The nose offers scents of vanilla and pineapple with a subtle hint of peppercorn. It is creamy upon entry and, like the blanco, the wonderful vegetal flavor of lowlands agave is the first flavor on the palate. This gives way to wonderful notes of apricot, mango, and a hint of oaky sweetness from its resting in new American oak barrels. The reposado is a little less subtle then the silver counterpart, and also has a slightly longer finish that leaves you with a nice aftertaste of dried fruit and pepper.

Tequila Semental Añejo Tasting Notes
Boasting a color of rich caramel, the añejo has a very sweet bouquet. The smell gives away the age category of this tequila. Unlike the reposado, the añejo is rested in a totally different kind of barrel – new hybrid French and American oak barrels (French caps, American staves). It has a mild agave aroma with notes of tangerine and a hint of vanilla. It is the most well-balanced of the Semental lineup, with a solid agave flavor woven with flavors of smoky cedar, chocolate, and caramel. There’s a nice, short-lived finish (but longer than both the silver and reposado) that is mellow, but full of flavor.

Cocktail Mixing Notes
All three varieties work well in a margarita and other cocktails, although some of the more subtle flavors from the blanco and reposado get lost in the mix. The añejo shines brightest again; the eldest Semental injects a nice lowlands agave flavor to a margarita without overpowering it with sweetness.
About Tequila Semental
Tequila Semental is currently available in Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. The brand was founded by Efrain Lopez in 2007 with the aim to produce only the highest quality tequila, while using the most modern equipment. It is distilled from lowlands agave by artisan Master Distiller and blender Valente Arellano L.C.Q. at Hacienda de Oro (NOM 1522). The entire lineup performed well at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition where the reposado garnered double gold medals, the añejo received a gold medal, and the silver was awarded a silver medal.
