Tesla has just built its 1,000th Roadster and to celebrate they will be auctioning it off for charity. The milestone special edition Roadster Sport is finished in “Millennial White” with a special carbon fiber interior and accent pieces.
This benchmark Roadster Sport is part of Tesla’s display at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. It has a suggested retail price of $175,000 and the proceeds of the auction will go to several Detroit based charities.
According to Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk the 1000th Roadster is quite an accomplishment. “A year ago right here in Detroit we had delivered about 150 Roadsters, so VIN 1,000 is a humble but important milestone for us, it’s fitting to do something special with this unique car.”
No you aren’t seeing the same 1000th Tesla Roadster Sport before it was cleaned in the picture above, it is actually a milestone car in its own right. This is actually the 750th Tesla Roadster Sport that had been driven 2700 miles on a cross-country trip from Los Angeles to Detroit.
The Tesla Roadster Sport was driven through two snowstorms while crossing nine states in three time zones. Of course this required no gasoline as the Tesla Roadster Sport is an all electric vehicle capable of a zero to sixty time of just 3.7 seconds.
The Tesla booth at the Detroit auto show also features “VIN 750,” an Arctic White Roadster Sport that recently completed a 2,700-mile cross-country road trip to Detroit from Los Angeles. Tesla employees drove 750 through nine states, three time zones, and two snowstorms – without a drop of gasoline.
Also on display at the 2010 North American International Auto Show is the forthcoming 2012 Tesla Model S. The Model S will bring Tesla into the main stream with a sedan that will seat up to seven. The price will also make Tesla more accessible to the general car buying public.
After the US Federal tax credit for electric and hybrid vehicles, the Model S will start at $49,900. It is fitting that Tesla is making such a splash at the Detroit show as they are fast becoming a major player in the US Auto Market. Watch my Tesla Roadster review and video here.
