It all began with a question. Are all fruit tarts created equal? Local high-end bakeries all make it seem that way. Glossy fruit, beautiful arrangement. But can you judge a tart by its cover?
We put it to the test. A blind taste test, comparing three fruit tarts from three local bakeries. A fruit tart from the outstanding French Bakery in Bellevue. A fruit tart from the gourmet bakery at Whole Foods in Bellevue. And a stunning fruit tart from PCC Natural Markets in Redmond.
Let the race begin with the tart itself. PCC’s tart shell is just the right texture. It crumbles only in your mouth and the taste is delicious. The French Bakery, on the other hand is more crumbly, too crumbly in fact (and yet the taste is heavenly). But coming in at first place is Whole Foods’ fruit tart for the clever trick of lining the tart shell with a thin coating of white chocolate. The chocolate prevents the custard filling from soaking the tart and turning it too soft and crumbly. Round one, therefore, ends in favor of Whole Foods’ fruit tart.
Now let’s delve into the custard. PCC’s custard is nice and creamy. Whole foods custard is not as delicious. In fact, it has a mundane flavor, not exotic enough for the tempting appearance of a fruit tart. But the French Bakery wins this round hands down. Their custard cream is truly heavenly, making the whole fruit tart a true treat.
And now, for the fruit themselves. Everyone of the fruit tarts looks stunning. The fruits gleam, and the colors are irresistible. The layering on the French Bakery fruit tart has a stunning addition of kiwi to add a splash of color to the fruit tart. The PCC fruit tart is rich in berries and the colors are pretty together. But the Whole Food’s fruit tart is the most beautiful. The mound of fruit is incredibly high, and the colors are stunning. And most important of all! The fruit on the Whole Foods fruit tart is the most delicious, incredibly rich in flavor and sweetness. A true treat.
So there you have it. No single answer to serve your purpose, as often happens in life. Rather, decide which part of the fruit tart you love best, then use these taste test results to buy the best fruit tart for you.
