The Greek Joint is like a muse. You can’t really see her, but she calls to you in the winds, (whispering) “Order a Gyro,” “Order a Gyro, and Spanokopita too!”
You can’t see it, because it isn’t really there. The Greek Joint is the home delivery service of the full kitchen from SAS Martini Lounge in Hollywood, at 1814 Harrison street right off of Young Circle. Stand right in front of The Greek Joint, and you’ll see a posh martini lounge, but your eyes deceive you. The magic lies hidden inside.
The concept was started by the popular demand of the local SAS customers, who pleaded with Greek owners, brothers Chris and Jimmy, to offer their authentic Gyro and Souvlaki sandwiches delivered to their Hollywood homes and offices. The Greek Joint gave them just what they asked for. At under $4 for a fresh, hot loaf of pita bread stuffed with seasoned thin-sliced gyro pork, chunks of pork souvlaki or chunks of white meat chicken souvlaki, The Greek Joint’s “Souvlaki”, are a form of “kebob,” with chunks of chicken or pork grilled to tender perfection on a skewer. Platters of pita sandwiches and souvlaki include fries and a small salad for around $8.
There’s gyros and then there’s The Greek Joint’s Gyro. If the only Gyro you’ve ever had was carved from the meat of those rotating molded, ground meat things, do yourself a favor and try the Greek Joint’s Gyro made from seasoned, cuts of slow-roasted pork.
The Greek Joint also offers other Greek traditional dishes such as Spanokopita, a spinach pie with a light blend of Feta cheese in layered paper thin sheets of filo dough; “Moussaka,” an eggplant and beef casserole with a tomato sauce and light custard topping; and of course the world famous “Greek Salad.”
The Greek Joint makes an especially bold Greek salad without any lettuce, consisting entirely of large chunks of tomato, and cucumber, along with peppers, Feta cheese, and tangy Kalamata olives. Offering the standard burger and chicken sandwiches, half and full racks of ribs, The Greek Joint has the lunch, dinner, and late night munchies covered.
Bill’s Personal Examination:
At work, we order lunch from The Greek Joint most Wednesdays now. My favorite is the chicken souvlaki pita sandwich for under $3.75 tax included. Juicy chunks of grilled chicken breast, with onions, tomato and a yogurt-based tzatziki sauce, stuffed generously into a soft and warm pita loaf.
The Spinach pie from The Greek Joint is not like Mama used to make, somehow, I haven’t quite pegged it yet, it is more like Gia Gia (grandma) used to make, and that’s the point about Greek food, it is from the home, and every wife and mother got their recipe from their mother, etc. Mama’s and Gia Gia’s Spanokopita was delicious, and so is The Greek Joint’s.
From the point of view of a displaced Greek boy, the only thing missing from the menu is Avgolemono Soup. Avgolemono, is a creamy blend of chicken and rice or orzo, in a lemony chicken broth. Good any time, literally.
