This summer, a little comedy called “The Hangover” came out of nowhere to stomp all the competition at the box office with over $200 million (well over $200 million, for that matter) in ticket sales and a raft of glowing reviews from critics. Now that the film’s been released on DVD, Warner Brothers is saying that they’ve got the best-selling DVD comedy of all time on their hands. Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers…
If you hadn’t heard, “The Hangover” is one of the best comedies of the year, and apparently now it’s the best-selling comedy of the year, too. The Todd Phillips-directed comedy did huge business at the box office, and with only several weeks in release on DVD under its belt, it’s now the best-selling comedy DVD of all-time. Here, read this press release:
Burbank, CA, January 6, 2010 – Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ The Hangover has added another milestone to its record-breaking 2009 run. Since its release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 15th 2009, the film has become the #1 comedy of all time on the DVD charts with combined consumer and rental sales topping 8.6 million units with 1.5 million units coming from Blu-ray purchases. Strong sales are expected to continue bringing the six-month estimate to 9.5 million units. The Hangover earned more than $467 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time.
Holy crap, over 10 million copies sold? $467 million worldwide? This is good news for fans of the comedy, who know that the more money “The Hangover” makes, the more Warner Bros. is going to want to put the pedal to the metal on getting that sequel made. It’s also good news for Zach Galifianakis fans, who are just glad to be seeing that comedian get the attention he so richly deserves. Stay tuned for more “Hangover” news in the near future, folks.
