Random sports thoughts …
I’ve heard lots of talk this week about bringing Michael Vick to the Bills. Am I the only one who heard Chan Gailey talk about the importance of character on and off the field? Got to wonder if those comments weren’t directed to Marshawn Lynch.
Not impressed by new GM Buddy Nix so far. Did he really have to spend the first 10 minutes of the Chan Gailey press conference picking a fight with the media?
So much for Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly being part of the decision-making process at One Bills Drive. Both seemed surprised by the hiring of Gailey. Not that that’s a bad thing. I really don’t want those two making football decisions, but I think they could be great ambassadors for the team and the city when it comes to talking to potential free agents.
I’m willing to give Gailey the benefit of the doubt, but what happens if the Bills get off to a slow start next season? Fans would give Bill Cowher a season or two to turn things around. Gailey will get about two games to make a positive impression.
The hiring of Nix as GM and Gailey as coach won’t fill seats next year, which means the team will have to make a big splash in the draft or free agency … or both.
I hate these 10 p.m. West Coast Sabres games.
Can’t wait to see Tim Kennedy return to the lineup for the Sabres. I think he’ll learn from his recent benching and come out on fire.
While Patrick Lalime has been playing better this year, his brief outing on Tuesday was a complete disaster. Another game like that and he might be writing his own ticket out of Buffalo.
The Bandits are off to a slow start, but the bagpipe routine to open the game is one of the best sports traditions in Buffalo! The B-O-X chant is a close second.
Speaking of the Bandits, the team will hold a Veterans Appreciation Night on Saturday, Feb. 6, against the Toronto Rock at 7:30 p.m. All veterans who show their Military ID will be eligible to purchase a 300 Level ticket for only $10. Tickets can be purchased through the HSBC Arena box office or online at bandits.com (coupon code: Military).
As for those Bandits, the team needs more discipline. The continual parade to the penalty box has to stop at some point, and there needs to be more urgency with the man advantage. During a shift change with a 5-on-3 advantage Saturday night against Rochester, it took about 15 seconds to get two new players off the bench and into the action. By that time, the penalties were just about over.
I’m looking forward to the Bisons Hot Stove Luncheon this Friday. Should be lots of interesting questions for Omar Minaya regarding both the Mets and Bisons. Personally, I can’t believe he’s kept his job this long.
Hope I get a chance to try the recently reopened toboggan run at Chestnut Ridge Park. I remember doing that when I was a kid! Does anyone know if they allow downhill skiing at Chestnut Ridge or Emery Park? Know any local parks that have outdoor ice skating ponds?
