How did you get involved with Driscoll’s Berries?
We’re a specialty firm whose interest and experience lies with premium brands. We have a strong reputation and are sought after for our services, experience and resources.
What is their mission, other than to sell their product?
The Driscoll’s mission is to bring joy to the lives to berry lovers. The company strives to produce the finest berries in the world.
Why are berries so essential to our diet (both children and adults)?
Fresh strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are packed with antioxidants and other important nutrients, and the pigments that give them their bright color are also good for your health. Berries contain what are called phytochemicals and flavonoids, and these may help prevent some types of cancer. Blueberries, in particular, contain a substance that may even prevent bladder infections and slow the cognitive decline that comes with aging. Finally, blueberries and raspberries contain lutein, which is important for healthy vision.
Are some berries better than others?
As you can see from the previous question, each berry has merits, so it’s important to include a variety in your diet.
What are the differences between berries? Different berries require different growing conditions. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries each prefer a different soil pH. Berries also have slightly different antioxidant levels and health benefits.

Berries can be quite expensive, especially during the off-season. What is your advice for families who are pinching their pennies? Berries are a nutritional bargain. For their size, they deliver tremendous health benefits and now, thanks to Driscoll’s farming practices, berries of every kind are available year round, making them more accessible to everyone.
Is there a difference between fresh and frozen berries? Once frozen berries thaw, they will be soft and mushy, not as firm as freshly picked berries, but they are still a healthy choice. Frozen berries will also discolor a batter where fresh berries won’t.
Is there a difference between organic and non-organic berries? Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Organic farmers apply natural fertilizers, such as manure or compost, to feed soil and plants; they use beneficial insects and birds, mating disruption or traps to reduce pests and disease; they rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds and give animals organic feed and allow them access to the outdoors. Organic farmers also use preventive measures — such as rotational grazing, a balanced diet and clean housing — to help minimize disease. Current conventional farming matches organic farming when it comes to environmental advantages. Both have beneficial insects, produce less pesticide and fertilizer runoff, and reduce soil erosion. Food quality is almost identical in conventional and organic farming. (Advocates of organic farming have long claimed their food is far superior, but this is still unproven.) Conventional farming also produces about 20% more yield than organic farming.
What about using sources such as jellies and jams, fruit bars, etc.?
I’m assuming this question is about sources of antioxidants and vitamins. Fresh berries are a much better source of antioxidants than jam, jelly or fruit bars, all of which are processed.
What are the advantages of packing lunch vs. buy school lunch?
Packing a lunch is more economical and healthier than school lunches.
What is a well-balanced lunch? Please give an example.
A well-balanced lunch includes something from each food group. See complete video about healthy school lunches at http://www.voiceofreason.net/the_voice_of_reason/tina.html
What about families who get free lunches?
Berries can be enjoyed any time of day, not just at lunch, so any meal or snack is an opportunity to sneak berries into your diet!
What makes nutrition awareness more important today than before?
What else can families do to improve overall health?
Strive to eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day; take a multivitamin; limit television watching in favor of exercise, sports or other activities; schedule regular teeth cleanings and wellness exams with your doctor and try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.
