This weekend in Phoenix, Arizona, the Annual P.F. Chang’s Rock and Roll marathon and half marathon is taking place. If running in the P.F. Chang’s marathon or half marathon for 2011 is a fitness goal that you have set for yourself for the New Year, then here are some tips to help you get started.
Get checked out by your Doctor to make sure that you are physically able to train for a marathon.
Buy yourself a good pair of running shoes. A good pair of running shoes will keep your ankle, knee and hip joints from injury. Running is a high impact sport. The best place to buy running shoes is the Runner’s Den in Phoenix. They will have you run on a treadmill to evaluate your foot strike and then recommend the best shoe for you.
Join a running club such as Phoenix FIT. These running clubs are great for meeting and training with others who have the same goal. They have coaches who are very knowledgeable in training for marathons and they will provide you with the mileage that you need to be running during the week. They also discuss proper running technique, (yes, there is a technique to running), and nutrition.
Run in 5 and 10k’s throughout the year. Running in smaller races leading up to the P.F. Chang will give you an idea as to what to expect in a race and the shorter distances will give you the chance to work on your form as well as speed.
Invest in a sports watch. Having a watch that keeps track of time, distance and pace is a valuable tool to have when you are training. It doesn’t have to be expensive but it should be able to give you your distance, speed and time. Buying a watch with a heart rate monitor will also aid you in your training. Knowing what your heart rate is while you are running can let you know if you are going too hard or not hard enough. It will also keep you from over training.
Have the family train with you. If you are a mom with a baby or young child then put them in a running stroller and take them with you. If your children are older then have them ride their bikes alongside you. Your kids with enjoy themselves and so will you.
Training for the P.F. Chang’s marathon or any marathon is a great way to keep on track with your fitness and weight loss goals. Follow the tips above and you will be ready for P.F. Chang’s Rock n Roll Marathon and Half Marathon in 2011.
