Us Helping Us, People Into Living announced yesterday that it has elected eight new board members. UHUPIL is the only non-profit organization in DC made for and by African-American gay/bisexual men. The organization, which hosted a lavish fundraiser and awards reception last fall and re-launched a new website in December 2009, retained their treasurer and secretary and gained six new members. “Us Helping Us has a national reputation for excellence and a part of that has always been the integrity and professionalism of its Board of Directors,” said Ron Simmons, Ph.D., the President/CEO. “Our Board members are successful professionals committed to the fight against HIV infection in the Black community, particularly as it affects gay and same-gender-loving men. I am excited about the Board’s new leadership and its continued commitment to programs for Black women and youth.”
The new board members are as follows:
James Hadley, M.A. (Chairman) – the Director of the National Outreach Network at the National Cancer Institute, a component of the National Institutes of Health.
Jhahbriel C. Moore Sr. (Vice-Chairman) – a Sr. Account Manager for National Accounts in the Mid-Atlantic Region for Kaiser Permanente Health Plan responsible for businesses with over 7,000 members.
Patrick McGlone, Esq. (Treasurer) – Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for ULLICO Inc.
A. Cornelius Baker (Secretary) – a Senior Communications Advisor and Project Director at the Academy for Educational Development Center on AIDS and Community Health, and the National Policy Advisor for the National Black Gay Men’s Advocacy Coalition.
Donovan Anderson, Esq. – an attorney in private practice specializing in representing parents in special education administrative due process hearings on matters relating to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
L. Michael Gipson – the Development Director for the Flowers Heritage Foundation in Oakland, CA, where he is responsible for fund raising, digital marketing, event planning, and grant development.
Preston James, M.B.P.A. – a Quality Assurance & Training Consultant providing services to include program design & development, staff development/training and organizational development.
Dennis R. Wirt, M.D. – a pediatrician in private practice.
First order of business for the newly elected board will be formulating a Board Development Committee. This sub committee will focus on recruiting new members, especially women, and generating more community support. The Board of Directors is responsible for fund raising and program evaluation.
