Vashon Island really isn’t that far away from the big city although it sure feels like it.
Only a 15 minute ferry ride from Seattle or Tacoma brings city and suburb dwellers to the peaceful, green, rural, somewhat sleepy isle of Vashon and its close neighbor, Maury Island. The island is approximately the size of Manhattan island yet with only 11,000 year round population. The summer population zooms to about 15,000 as it is one of the most beautiful spots in the world to spend the warm, dry months.
Camp Burton is located on a prime piece of waterfront real estate near the tiny village of Burton. It is a multi-purpose retreat site for a number of non-profit organizations like government groups, public and private schools, hobby groups, and religious organizations to hold their events.
They can offer accommodations for groups of 10 to 175 individuals that abounds with peaceful settings and comfortable facilities. Amenities include waterfront property in a wooded setting, meeting spaces large and small, a variety of lodging situations, and delicious meals.
Camp Burton has year-round personnel including office, maintenance, kitchen, and housekeeping.
Each summer Camp Burton is the site for the Youth New Horizons Camp for developmentally disabled youth ages 14 to 24 or those who are mildly physically disabled.
The camp is religious in nature as it is owned by the American Baptist. Youth New Horizons Camp does offer camper appropriate Bible story time, blessings at the meals, faith based songs at campfires, and an overall theme that God loves everyone and is our friend.
The summer 2010 camp will be July 11-16, 2010. Registration will open in March of 2010, so check the Camp Burton website for registration forms.
Activities include swimming at the local pool, canoeing, games, archery, and campfires.
In order to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, campers must be able to care for their own personal needs (eating, dressing, and restroom use) with minimal assistance and be able to participate in most camp activities.
The Directors, Cabin Leaders and Registered Nurse have been selected for their skill and caring for the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of disabled persons. The majority of our staff have had prior camp experience.
All summer staff participate in training events prior to the beginning of camp, complete an application, have references checked, and submit to a Washington State Patrol background check. The Site Staff working all summer perform jobs such as kitchen assistants, archery instruction, craft instruction, and waterfront instruction.
Youth New Horizons is $215/person for the week and includes all meals, lodging, and program activities. They usually serve between 30-40 campers at this session.
If this sounds like fun, they can always use more adult cabin leaders. This is a volunteer position and room and board plus lots of friends and laughter are all included.
Vashon Island is definitely worth the trip. Its just a little piece of paradise right in the middle of the sound.
Thanks Camp Burton for providing this great camp opportunity!
