Gary Teperman, produces, directs and writes the web series “Saving Rent.” Jonathan Zweben produces. Alice Cutler (who also plays Kelley,) wrote half of the episodes and also helped in producing the series. . There are 12 webisodes each running ten minutes.
Mike and Kelley have moved to LA from Boston. Kelley aspires to be a singer, while Mike goes to his office job everyday. ….Actually, Mike doesn’t have a job or much hope of getting one. He leaves the house in the morning and goes to the beach. Mike stands the chance of losing the house if some cash doesn’t start coming in.
Roommates seems to be the answer to keeping the house and a search begins for the perfect roommates.
Chucho, a non-English speaking, illegal immigrant whom Mike met at the beach is the first roommate chosen. Mike has been spending time with him while hiding from Kelley during the day. They forge a relationship based on tossing a football and listening to each other’s problems, (actually Mike talks, Chucho listens.)
An eclectic group of people are found to fill the other rooms in the house. In addition to Chucho, there is Paul, who is looking for work as an actor. Tina who is also an actor looking for work in the ‘adult film industry.’ Suzie rounds out the group, she’s 21 going on 16, literally.
As the roommates settle into life with Mike and Kelley, each encounters their own frustrations. Chucho sees a lovely young women and starts stalking her. Paul takes jobs such as being a pirate on Hollywood Blvd. taking photos with tourists. Suzie gets a job in a cafe, her age only a slight mystery.Tina gets closer to a career in adult films.
Mike and Kelley have their own troubles. Jobs are still elusive for Mike and Kelley is singing to less than packed houses.
In the episode that reveals everyone’s secrets, the laughs come fast and furious. The writing and acting for this one episode are superior to most sit-coms that have made it to TV. I would like to see a complete half hour show for each of the 12 webisodes. “Saving Rent” is that good.
The opening of each episode plays like a soundtrack to a sit-com from the 80s. The story line is more timely, people are losing their homes, taking in a roommate or two is actually a good idea. Teperman takes these two situations and writes a show around them that is fresh and funny. There are a few shades of sit-coms past. Little hints of ‘Three’s Company’ and even ‘Friends’ are sprinkled in, but not copied.
Another very appealing part of this series is that it ties up all lose ends. It’s a complete series, with everything in it’s place with nothing left to tidy up.
Under Gary’s direction these actors come together as an ensemble. Alice Cutler (Kelley,) Vincent Giovanni (Mike,) Jacob Lane (Paul,) Mallory McGill (Suzie,) Ashley Palmer (Tina,) and my favorite Alex Ruiz who plays Chucho. I love every scene he’s in and expect to see much more from him.
This whole cast is good, writings good, direction….it’s all good. Step out of your own reality and into “Saving Rent,” you won’t be disappointed. .
