If you focus too much of your attention on wondering if you will get the job or not, you will surely increase your nervousness. It is OK if you get the job. It is OK if you don’t get the job. The thing you truly need to focus on is learning from the experience. Instead of allowing yourself to become nervous, you could try different approaches to prevent your nerves from becoming a hindrance.
The time you use for nervousness is most likely due to uncertainty. The impact of what we say and the goals we are attempting to reach are all hinged on this critical interview. That pressure leads to uneasiness and a bit of paranoia. The job interview is important but it is not life threatening. This is only one interview. Even if it is your first interview, it will not be your last.
Most people do not get anxious about every single thing in their lives. In reality there are some things that you do with an extreme amount of confidence, just as much as there are things you do with heightened hesitation. You must remind yourself of that confident feeling when you are faced with uncertainty. For an example, lets say 7 of 10 times you eagle at the 16th hole. You are so confident about the 16th hole that you drive without hesitation. In reality, as was mentioned, you are only 70% successful but that is enough. With that 70% chance of success you know and believe you can make eagle. You have developed the exact level of confidence to feel powerful at the 16th hole.
Now let’s think about if you could be that confident at a job interview… WOW! Walk up with CONFIDENCE and CERTAINTY because you already know you will have the job when you finish the interview. You will not always receive a job offer, but sometimes you will. It is up to you to determine your way of viewing the situation. Positive thinking, begets positive results.
It is important for you to think about why you have confidence at the 16th hole. It could be the birds chirping, you can see the lake in the background of this particular hole or knowing you could win if you just go under on the next 3 holes. Whatever it is, you need to identify this feeling and use it within your job interviews. If it is the environment that gets you to that point of comfort, apply that in your interview preparation.
Prior to the interview you will know the time and the place of the interview. Therefore if you truly want to reduce your butterflies, have a mock interview as close as you can to the facility at the exact same time of the interview. If you just do this a few times, your mind and body will adjust to answering interview style questions at the exact same time and general area of the interview. You are literally training your mind and body to function in an interview way of thinking. When you approach the interview, just remember the mock interview, the real interview will not be any different. Just walk up and hit another Eagle!
