He’s a highly eligible bachelor if you discount his mistress.
I’m speaking on Coach Freddie Roach, who is to soon learn that age 50 is the New 40.
Roach is married, not to any particular woman but to boxing. He’s said it himself and his work ethic shows it.
Money’s been no problem for some time as the Manny Pacquiao Gravy Train keeps rolling.
Roach is one ex-boxer they won’t be holding any “not a handout but a hand up” benefit dinners for.
So, having said that, I now say this. I find it encouraging that so many Newbies, meaning fight fans who are transitioning from being only Pacmaniancs into real followes of our sport, did not take the bait on Roach’s recent public offer to Floyd Kill Joy Mayweather.
I don’t know why but I’ve always found “winner take call” calls irritating. Not to mention annoying and stupid as well.
Roach trumpeted it with a plan and purpose.
The little guy from Dedham, Mass., has turned into Angelo Dundee when it comes to prefight hype.
So this is no Roach rip, trust me. As Tupac might say it, I a’int mad at ya, Coach!
“Winner take all” is a fruity concept and I don’t think any self respecting athletic commission or world governing body should ever permit such arrangements.
It’s demeaning to all involved. I mean, come on the Saints won the Super Bowl but can anyone argue that Payton Manning and his teammates should have played for free?
Secondly, I don’t see Pacman co-signing Freddie’s pledge, do you?
I don’t see anyone else who has a hand in Manny’s bulging pockets, least of all Brothers Arum and de la Hoya, rallying around Freddie’s flag, either.
In this case, I don’t blame the Mayweather camp for not responding to Roach’s puffery.
How could a guy who calls himself “Money May” go into a $40 million jackpot bout, a career high payday, looking at the possibility that pay per view becomes pay nada?
Mayweather’s Mayback can’t run on mere fumes and the Big Boy Mansion must be heated during the sometimes chilly Las Vegas winters, not to mention that costly air conditioning in the warmer months.
Pugilistic poppycock, that’s what “winner take all” is, a schoolyard challenge.
Kudos to the getting smarter fight fans, be they Pacfans or Mayweather Mafia types, who ignored it.
I can’t take “winner take all” seriously, I really can’t.
Now “winner take most” that is a different story, morning glory.
